Weekend Recap

It was a nice weekend. There was snow, and I had time for myself to spend with... myself. :)

There was snow and it looked beautiful from my window;

I walked around the shopping mile and the old town area. The christmas market (weihnachtsmarkt) being opened made it even better. I will post markt photos seperately.

Perhaps, of most importance, I enjoyed small luxuries.

Aachen is a Beautiful City

It snowed this weekend and some people were nice enough to take photos and upload them to Flickr.

Indeed, it is beautiful!

Semiconductor Market Growth in Years

My new job has a brought a lot of change to my news-reader profile. I have adapted my feeds (rss) to have more focus on the semiconductor industry. I have unsubscribe from most of the nanotechnology feeds I used to read. For those wondering, over-fed it may be, the only feed I am following regarding nanotechnology is AtoZ of Nanotechnology. It also suffers from chronic crappy design adopted by most of similar websites. Thank god for rss feeds, and content only browsing (sounds like the same thing).

And as for the new feeds I have started to join, they are mostly broad-scope semiconductors market oriented. However, some of them have a more focus on LED technologies, III/V compounds processing, etc.

Anyway, the reason of the above explanation is to give you a hint that sometimes you might see some recaps by me of some news or other interesting stuff coming from those feeds.

And yes, here is the first one; The article was about the current economic crisis and how it will affect the semiconductors industry in the coming years.  Unlike many who compare the situation to the Big Depression, the article is focused on more downturns and making a fair comparison of factors the expected downturn, they claim, will not be worse than the recession during the 2001 bursting of the dot-com bubble era. BTW, Salon.com was among many predicting that.

The Big Bang Theory, Low Ratings?

This is a cheap shot to grab attention Mr.Lorre, may I call you Mr.Lorre?

lame attempt!

Although full of praise the ending kind of sets me off.

There was a reference to the Star Wars The Clone Wars, along with the Star Trek movies in the last episode of The Big Bang Theory, which concluded the evening with the above caption.

Some People Do Not Really Get Facebook!

It's that time of the year again. You know, the time for me to whine about some people's misunderstanding of some concepts.

Take the guy on top for example. If you had enough of people, and seek some solitude, Facebook had to be the last place to be, let alone sharing this wish. A wag of my finger goes to him!

Or the girl at the bottom; If you want to take a day off from Facebook; just do it. Am I the only one seeing the irony in taking a day off from facebook and doing this by sharing an event on facebook, and discussing and promoting it on facebook?

The guy in the middle; well, I don't care about him, so he gets to avoid being bashed this time.

R2D2 Spotted Topless! Click for Sexy Pictures!

I've been watching the new animated series Star Wars The Clone Wars since the first episode was aired on the Cartoon Network, and I gotta say that it's a nice production and a lot of fun. The clones are far less clonish than I expected, almost individuals on their own rights. Besides we get to see, Anakin teaching his young padawan. [Since we don't see or hear her being mentioned in the Episode III, I am guessing she will end up dead, or worse; on the dark side by the end of the Clone Wars.]

This week's episode was the second part of two-parter and featured a closer look into R2D2, literally. I have captured some snapshots watching the HDV quality mkv on VLC.

The inner-working of the R2 droid has been exposed for the first time (my force foresight abilities tell me some nerds will come running to mention a previous sighting)!

While at it I have also captured the following. They are kind of tiny spoilers, so view at your own risk.

Eye Den Titty

Yesterday, my first day off after my first week at work, I was surprised to wake up to a wonderful sunny saturday. So I decided to go out, walk around, do shopping and window-shopping. The shopping mile was crazy crowded, but still quality/quantity value was incomparable to that of any Swedish city.

Walking around, I noticed an optics store named eyedentity. Someone who has had enough of those "clever" word tricks thought they could have done "better".

Ten minutes of photoshopping and a love for titties put together I came up with this. This is not just way cooler but also they would have been making much more money if they had come up with this idea themselves.

Meanwhile searching for something related on the internet to spice this article up, I found this;

loved it!

Germans should accept it; They secretly love America!

Germany! People always warn you; "They don't speak English there" .

And those people have a point; They don't. There are two types of those who don't speak English;
1. Frenchians as I would like to call them, basically since they suffer from the same problem; they just CANNOT speak English.
2. War-oldies, the very old guys are still angry about being bombed. (Low in number)

Yet, not being able to speak English doesn't stop their secret love; they just keep borrowing words from English. If you watch an F1 race on RTL (German National Network, although RTL stands for Radio Television Luxembourg) you are likely to hear Das Safetycar. [Yep, German's love of combining words to make a new word also applies to English words.]

There is an amazing article by Jonathan Marks I came across with while surfing the web. Let me quote some parts;
When I order tickets from German rail (DB), they're sent to me from the DB Fulfillment Center. Making sure I've got my Ticket and my BahnCard entitling me to reduced fares, I board the train. If it's an InterCityExpress of the latest design, I like to sit in the Lounge, where I can look out ahead through the driver's compartment, and during longer journeys I generally go to the restaurant car for a Snack. I always know I can rely on the members of the train's Service Team to answer any questions about connections and so on. On certain overnight routes I can travel by CityNightLine. If I had a car, I could maybe take advantage of Carsharing, Park+Ride or Park&Rail. As I haven't got a car, I haven't looked into what the difference between the last two is, so I can't tell you whether the differential use of the symbols + and & is significant. City-Tickets are ideal for Shopping and Sightseeing. Other DB services include Call a Bike and Rail&Fly. If you need to know more, major stations have a ServicePoint to deal with travellers' queries.

Having read only this part, you might think that those names are borrowed from English just for the sake of brand-naming and being an international company (DB!).
But hey! Keep reading;
Verbs recently borrowed from English are given normal German inflections for person:

ich designe
du designst
er designt

ich recycle
du recyclest
er recycelt

But there's some variation, and sometimes uncertainty, in the case of past participles:

gecancelt
gehijackt
('-t' as in German)

but:
getuned
getimed
('-ed' as in English)

The full article is at MedMagazine.

And, here is the reason that drove me to google "english words in german" ;
It's a photo I took on Pontstrasse in Aachen, Germany. Fancy art store has been selling(?) these for some time now, probably at least for a month.

In all honesty...

I started my new job yesterday but this post is not about that. For those wondering, it's perfekto!

I just want to say, in all honesty, that I don't believe in fairness and the whole sanctimony upon "everyone gets what they deserve/Karma" thing. Meaning, I think McCain will win.

Sorry.

After a Short Break

After a Short Break, I am back again.

Back in many ways;
  • back at home(?) in Aachen
  • back from Sweden
  • back from visiting Belit in Bremen
  • back to productivity and a regular life
The last one being about me starting working. Yes, finally all is in order and I have finalized all the bureaucratic steps and I will start working on Monday.

Below are some photos from the way, enjoy!

Bremen, Aachen'a doğru hareket eden trene bindiğim şehir oldu. Geçen sene de Kopenhag'dan Reutlingen'e giderken 5 gün kadar kalmıştım Bremen'de. Güzel iki gece geçirdim yine, :).

Stokholm'e her gidişim, oraya yerleşme planları yapmamla son buluyor nedense...
